Life-Saving ..Bra?

I stumbled upon this article today when browsing Inhabitat’s Twitter feed. I’ll admit I was caught off guard by the title and was instantly intrigued. The premise of this “Emergency Bra” by Elena Bodnar is that it doubles as both an undergarment and a life-saving device. It may be worn as a regular bra and may be taken off when needed to separate into two masks which filter out harmful gases. While it may not be your daily go-to bra, there is no denying its utility in the event of a fire or radiological attack. It was inspired by Bodnar’s personal experience with the nuclear plant disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 and won the 2009 Ig Nobel Public Health prize. It also doubles as a floatation device in certain sizes! (Kidding!!)

In addition, if you’re interested in not only green DIY, but becoming more environmentally-conscious in general, be sure to check out Inhabitat’s Twitter page and their site. Inhabitat’s mission statement is “Green design is good design. Good design is green design.” This is truly reflected in their site, which is devoted towards sharing articles about green design innovations in the fields of energy, architecture, transportation, technology, and more. They focus on contemporary design that is not only environmentally friendly, but is also stylish and multi-faceted. Their commitment to this modern outlook on design is both refreshing and inspiring and has shed light on outlining my future in environmental engineering.
